Ceramics in bio-applications

Ceramics used for the repair and reconstruction of diseased or damaged parts of the body are termed bioceramics. According to the type of bioceramics used and their interaction with the host tissue, they can be categorized as bioinert (alumina, zirconia), bioactive (hydroxyapatite, bioactive glasses), and resorbable (tricalcium phosphate). They are commonly used in orthopaedic surgery and dentistry but they are potentially suitable for a wide range of important applications within the biomedical device industry. This special issue titled ‘ceramics in bio-applications’, which is published in Biomaterials Research, covers fabrication, modification, biocompatibility and physical property of current bioceramics.
