Placebo and Nocebo

Placebo and nocebo effects are the direct result of the influence of the psychosocial context or therapeutic environment on a patient's mind, brain, and body. Both phenomena can be influenced by multiple factors, such as verbal suggestions and past experience. Articles relate broadly to both placebo and nocebo effects, including:

  • Positive non-specific effects of enhanced patient care, such as particular communication styles and surroundings.
  • Negative non-specific effects deriving from negative expectations of the clinical encounter, as a result of prior unsuccessful therapies.
